Battle of Sinhagad 1670 A.D
Sinhagad fort is one of the most famous Forts in the history of Maharashtra, located 35 km from Pune City with a height of 1330 ft. above sea level, surrounded by dense forest. Fort is carved with Strong Doors and fortification walls.

Kalyan Door and Pune Door are two Sinhagad fort main entrances for the fort. the roadway is available till fort.

Fort had faced many attacks and also had importance in the security of the Pune region. But the recapture of Sinhagad Killa(1670 A.D) had special importance.
Mughal Commander Mirza Raje Jai Singh came in Deccan to stop Shivaji Maharaj as per the instruction of Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb
Chhartapati Shivaji Maharaj realized that war with Mirza Raje Jaishing will cause huge losses to the army and empire. Till the time Mirza Raje has reached the Purandar Fort. Shivaji Maharaj sent a message to Mirza Raje Jai Singh to have a take. Meeting took place at the base of Purandar Fort between mirza Raje and Shivaji. Shivaji Maharaj had no choice, so sign the contract with Mirza Raje Jai Singh.

As per one of clause in agreement Shivaji Maharaj surrendered some of forts to Mughals. Such as Kondana, karnala fort, Rudramal, Tikona , Tung Fort, Rohida Isagad, Nardurga, Lohagad fort, Maangad, Songad, Ankola, Marakgad, Sakargad, Saroopgad, Manikgad, Morabkhan, Bhaktgad, Rupgad, Palaskkol, Bhandurga and Mahuligad Forts.

After the escape of Shivaji Maharaj from Agra. Shivaji Maharaj decides to recapture Sinhagad Fort. Shivaji Maharaj sent khalita (summoned) to army commander(Sardar) Tanaji Malusare for a meeting, coincidentally Tannaji Malusare was busy in preparation for the wedding, son Raiba.
Shivaji Maharaj had a plan to recapture the kondana Fort from the Mughals. but when came to know about the wedding ceremony of Riba they tried to hold a plan of recapturing the fort but Tanaji Malusare said "Pahile lageen Kondanyache Maag Raibache" in Marathi it means first wedding of Kondana Fort then of Raiba, what dedication of this Commander towards the Shivaji Maharaj and Swaraj.
Kondana fort feature, high elevation with scaled valley surrounded with forest, it was hard to capture with minimum troops. Tanaji Malusare and younger brother Suryaji planned to recapture the fort in the dark night, Tanaji Malusare scaled from the western side of the Fort with help of a domestic Monitor Lizard along hand some troops. which was impossible for any enemy to scale up the fort.
The deadly combat took place between Maratha and Mughal troops, Kalyan Darwaza was opened By Maratha troops. Suryaji attacked from Kalyan Door, the combat was between the Tanaji Malusare and Rajput officer Uday Singh in charge of the fort. wounded Tanaji Malusare's shield broke down he covered his defending hand with an upper head garment called (Pheta) and continued combat but he was on the ground.
The Maratha troops were disturbed and started living in the fort. Surayaji motivated troops and took charge of the attack and recaptured the Kondana fort, there was only the phrase " Jaibhavani and Har Har Mahadev "on the fort.

Soon the message of kondana recapture and Tanaji Malusare's death reached Shivaji Maharaj. On hearing news of Tanaji Malusare's death, Shivaji Maharaj was in feeling of sorrow and word came out.....
" Gad ala, pan sinha gela"
" Fort won but lost Lion"
From that day fort was renamed Sinhagad....
Shivaji Maharaj attained the wedding of Riba in absence of this lion Tanaji Malusare.
Every year trekkers visit Sinhagad and offer tribute to brave Tanaji Malusare.
Visitors enjoy the view of Purandar fort, Torna Fort, and Rajgad fort if the sky is clear one can also have a view of Tikona fort from the top of Sinhagad.
