Shaniwar Wada is a historical fortification located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It was built in 1732 by Bajirao I, who was the prime minister of the Maratha Empire. The fortification was the seat of power of the Peshwas, who were the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire.
Shaniwar Wada was constructed using stone and bricks and was surrounded by a moat. The fortification had five gates, out of which the main gate was called Dilli Darwaza. The palace of the Peshwas was the most significant building in Shaniwar Wada. It was a seven-story structure, with the top floor being made of wood. The palace had several courtyards and halls, including the Naachacha Diwankhana, which was used for dance performances, and the Juna Arsa Mahal, which was a hall used for meetings and discussions.
Shaniwar Wada also had several gardens and fountains, including the Ganesh Kunda, which was a fountain that was built in the shape of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh. The fortification was also known for its intricate woodwork and carvings, which adorned the walls and ceilings of the buildings.
Shaniwar Wada played an important role in the politics of the Maratha Empire. It was the site of several important meetings and discussions, and was also the residence of the Peshwas. The fortification was also the site of the infamous assassination of Narayanrao, the fifth Peshwa, in 1773.
